Dear Dr. Marta Lepes,

Thank you for coming on such short notice to cat-sit, Zhara, for one month. The Arabian wildcat and feral cat mix of genes has made her a unique pet. However, not an easy cat to handle. With your years of experience of working with animals, I hoped you and Zhara would get along. When you told me, she had slept with you I was delighted. I was pleased to find my house in good order upon my return. Thank you for overseeing the shutter project, cleaning the house, buying plants for the garden, and for taking good care of Zhara.

Hi Auntie Marta,

I am glad you cared for me even though I acted unruly. That is my nature. Most people are afraid of me. However, you seemed to like me and that was a shock. I liked the times you read books. Then you held me on your lap and petted my head. Sorry, I became angry when you moved the lap blanket.

Thanks for letting me into your bedroom. That was a surprise. I need affection. Do you remember I kissed your nose? The look on your face was close to terror. I settled on the bed and did not make trouble until you moved your feet.

Do you remember the night you put your hand on the kitchen counter, but did not see me? You were getting my kitty treats. You jumped when I growled. I have fond memories of our time together.

I have know Dr. Lepes for over 30 years and she has always shown great respect for every animal and owner. Her compassion and knowledge of pets are unsurpassed. I would easily trust her with my pets and my home if I were to take a trip. Knowing that she was there to love and care for my pets would bring me peace of mind. If you have to leave your home and beloved pets for any reason this is the person you should entrust them to, not some pet-sitter that may or may not treat them with the love and respect they deserve.

I have known Dr. Marta Lepes for 40 years from her studying sea lions after her graduation from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, to her recent pet sitting endeavor, Pet Companion Vet.

For two years she worked with sea lions, fur seals, penguins, leopard seals and dolphins in New Zealand. We worked together in Indonesia where we coauthored a study of the dugong, a relative of the manatee. She was respected for her excellent care and kindness towards all the animals she worked with.

Later she owned a small animal veterinary hospital in Hilo, Hawaii where she was much loved and respected for her loving care of her patients and her diagnostic skills.

Dr. Lepes is a compassionate animal caregiver always putting the needs of animals first and a completely trustworthy person.

Dr. Marta Lepes was my boss over several summers when I worked at the Hilo Veterinary Clinic. The care and attention she showed her patients was truly remarkable. There was a Lemur named ET who was from the zoo receiving extended care. Many an evening, Dr. Lepes would sit writing up her patients records with ET peering over her shoulder or lounging on her desk. She made sure all the animals were tucked in and comfortable before she left for the evening. She even brought them Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. The animals always came first which seems common sense, but is not necessarily the norm. I have worked in a few veterinary clinics since then and have never come across a veterinarian who's dedication, compassion and diagnostic skills have matched those of Dr. Lepes.
